Chinatown - Retrospect with Prospect

Around a century and a half ago, a large number of Chinese people
went abroad to make a living with expectations of a hopeful prospect.
Along with their struggle in the new environment, their life overseas
was accompanied by the 5000-years traditions of the Chinese Culture.
Chinatown then became the window for understanding a part of this
ancient culture from a mysterious land.

Upon the arrival of the 21st century, with China's strength rapidly
reviving, the world's focus is very much put on this ancient country
once again. How then, in this present day, can Chinatown better serve
as a window into the Chinese Culture in a new era of global cultural
exchange and integration?

Chien Kun Foundation plans to launch a series of cultural activities in
April and May, which include: the early Toisanese immigrant history,
New York City's Chinatown culture, workshops and discussions, as
well as documentary screenings, etc. We're seeking support from
other organizations and encourage anyone with personal collections of
photos or documents to come and share them with all.

百多年前，大批的中國人漂洋过海到外地謀生發展，他們除了带着對
未來的憧憬，還把五千年的傳统中國文化帶到世界每個角落，當外國
人仍未瞭解中國時，他們只有透過唐人街來認識中國，但在他們眼中，
中國仍是一個神祕而古老的國家。

隨着二十一世紀中國國力的興起，全球化的潮流，全世界都在注视着
中國，唐人街作為一個海外的中國橱窗，我們如何定位與展示中國文
化呢？

乾坤基業將於四月份開始举办一連串的活動，包括台山移民歴史、唐
人街文化講座研討、紀錄片欣赏等。希望各团体共同協辦及参與，更
歡迎大众提供個人珍藏的歴史圖片與資料與众共赏。
